My mind reels back to 12 Dec, 2008 - My first day at APAC. I stood in front of VHS hospital not knowing where to go. After asking few people I finally reached the APAC office. All jittery and excited, I didn't know what to expect - a proper disciplined office background or a calm friendly place? With these contrasting thoughts I entered the office. As soon as I entered I met Ms Jismy who greeted me with a smile. Then I felt relaxed to notice that the place matched well with the second expectation. And I was thankful for it. That same day I was roped into writing the minutes of an editorial board meeting. In the meeting, other friendly APAC staff involved me in their discussions. Now that I think about it, this was the best way to start. As I started working here, I learned more about APAC. It is a project of VHS, set up with financial assistance from the US Agency for International Development (USAID) to control the spread of HIV and bring about behavior change among various sections of people in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. It organizes several intervention programs among high risk populations, conducts research on various issues related to HIV and has even set up a toll free helpline recently for PLHIV. APAC project, now in its 14th year, is in its third phase, which will last till 2012. Here I learned what the real office life is all about. I am extremely lucky because not everyone gets similar opportunities when they are still in school….doing their 10th board!!! Yes, I am an intern working in APAC for past three months. I come to APAC every (almost!) Thursday and Friday straight from my school. After giving five of my IGCSE exams I informed my school about working with an NGO. Always encouraging us to learn by experience, the school arranged this opportunity. And here I am…. Some students may ask how I manage both the internship and studies. I work only two days a week. Plus, our school allows me to leave early to reach APAC and provides several self study periods to catch up with the lost time. The experience I get here teaches time management and discipline which will help me in my exams. Internships teach what books can't teach - quick decision making, good working habits, social skills and a lot more minute skills, difficult to pin point, but which are extremely important. And you also gain lot of knowledge, just by observation. Therefore, it is important for schools to provide internship since it is an experience that will help students throughout their lifetime. After all, isn't education a lot about experience? Thank you APAC. Volunteers The best contribution you can make to the society is your time. If you are looking forward to associate with a social organization to fulfill your desire of working with the society, then this can be your first step. To be a volunteer with APAC,
you can send your CV/ resume mentioning your area of interest and the
